01 / Our story
Started by people who'd been on both sides
The other counselling directories felt commercial. Profiles read like adverts. The therapists at the top weren’t the best fit — they were the ones paying the most for placement.
So we built GoToTherapy with one rule: keep it free for the people seeking help. Counsellors pay a small flat membership; clients pay nothing. No premium tiers, no “unlock contact details”, no upsells.
Three years on, we list 1,200+ BACP-aligned counsellors across 22 UK cities. Every profile is written by the counsellor themselves. Every credential is verified before listing.

Four things we won't compromise on
Most directories make money by ranking counsellors who paid more. We refuse to do that.
Free for clients, always
We will never charge people seeking therapy. Not now, not ever, no premium tier. Counsellors pay a flat membership; you pay nothing.
No paid rankings
Search results are ordered by relevance to your search — never by who paid more for placement. The Featured tier adds visibility, not ranking.
Profiles in their own voice
Counsellors write their own bios. We don't AI-generate, sanitise, or "optimise" them. You read about each therapist in their own words.
Credentials, properly checked
Every BACP, UKCP, BABCP, NCPS and COSCA membership is verified against the register before listing — and re-checked annually.
03 / Verification
What we check before a listing goes live
Verification typically takes 2–3 working days. We don’t list anyone who can’t evidence all four.
Professional body membership
Current BACP, UKCP, BABCP, NCPS, COSCA, BPS or equivalent UK accreditation — verified directly with the register.
Professional indemnity insurance
All listed counsellors hold current professional indemnity insurance, evidenced before listing goes live.
Active clinical supervision
Counsellors confirm current clinical supervision, as required by their professional body's ethical framework.
Ethical framework adherence
Listed counsellors operate under their professional body's ethical framework and complaints procedure.

Small team, clear focus
We’re a UK-based team of eight. Three of us have lived experience of being a therapy client. Two are qualified counsellors who consult on policy. The rest are engineers, designers and operations.
We don’t take ad revenue. We don’t sell counsellor data. The membership fees pay for the platform — that’s it.
